Chapter 17
I slept during most of the flight to Chicago, then half of the flight to Salt Lake. I apologized to Gilles for not being much company. I was wiped out from the trip and he understood.
“Thank you, Gilles,” I said as we drove to Park City. “I know I've said it many times, but it was an awesome honeymoon.”
He smiled, kissing my hand. “You're welcome. We'll have to go back sometime and tour all of Italy.”
“That would be awesome.” I gave him a slow smile. “You'll have to use your Italian more often.”
“Okay, I will, but only during certain times, and only with you.”
“Sounds good to me.” I sighed dramatically and he chuckled.
When we arrived home, no one was there. We took our things and put them in my room. There would be no more sleeping apart. If things didn't work out the way we hoped, we would quickly find a place of our own.
Gilles called Dad. Dad said he was in Salt Lake and would be back later on. We looked forward to his return so we could break the news. I hoped and prayed he would understand.
Dad had asked Gilles to run and check on things at the lot. He kissed me and said he would hurry. I told him to take his time and I would be fine until he got back. After he left, I unpacked our dirty laundry and tossed it into the basket. As I picked up the basket to take it down to the laundry room, nausea rolled through my stomach. Dropping the basket, I made a beeline to the bathroom and threw up. Flushing the toilet, I pushed the hair back from my face and went to sink to rinse. I stood holding on to the counter top and took in my reflection, my heart beating hard as realization dawned on me. My period was three weeks late. I hadn't even thought about it until that moment.
Pulling my hair up in a bun, I splashed some water on my face, took a deep breath, then grabbed my purse and made a quick trip to the store, hoping with everything in me that I wouldn't run into anyone I knew. The last thing I wanted or needed right now were questions, though the wedding rings would bring questions as well.
Along with the pregnancy test, I grabbed a couple of extra things–a six-pack of Sprite, a box of Ritz crackers. At the moment, I didn't think I could stomach much else.
Three weeks late! My period was three weeks late and I had completely spaced it. What a scatterbrain. I guess that's what being in love with Gilles did to me. Literally!
As I stood in line to pay, a pretty middle-age woman standing in front of me turned around and smiled.
“You know, they say most people spend an average of five years just standing in lines. Grocery store lines, movie theatres, DMV, restaurants, bus stops, etc. I don't know about you, but I tend to believe it.
